Learn with the Lords Online session – Student Voice

Last month we were able to question a crossbench peer from the House of Lords, Baroness Finlay. Her background as a Welsh doctor and a professor of palliative medicine has clearly had an impact on her being able to talk with expertise in sharing her views as part of the Committee on Assisted Dying for example.

Our Year 12 and 13 politics students grilled her on a number of subjects about her role in the House of Lords and whether the House of Lords needs significant reform in a 21st century democracy. We were also able to get her views on the impact of Brexit, worldwide conflicts like Gaza and Ukraine, immigration as well as medical questions.

She was honest in providing detailed answers to what she outlined were her opinions on the subjects and said she had felt properly ‘grilled’ by some really excellent questioning. We were all really grateful for this opportunity and gained more thorough insights on worldwide politics and other situations surrounding the UK.
