We know the vital difference literacy levels make to not only educational outcomes, but also wellbeing and future life chances. Literacy is interwoven across the school as an essential component of each child’s educational experience. As well as high-quality English lessons, literacy is prioritised across all subject disciplines.
As part of Key Stage 3 English lessons, all pupils participate in the Rushcliffe Reads programme in which they listen to their teacher model expert reading, read a range of texts independently and complete tasks based on their reading choices.
To help guide pupils in reading for pleasure, we have compiled a selection of recommended texts:
We also enjoy promoting reading through events such as World Book Day and Harry Potter Day, as well as author visits.

LRC
The LRC is a well-resourced, vibrant learning space containing over 10,000 books categorised into 16 fiction genres and 54 non-fiction topics – there really is something for everyone!
On the library catalogue, pupils can search for books, make reservations, and renew any books they have out. The catalogue can be accessed here: https://uk.accessit.online/rsh06
Pupils can also access e-resources at home using mobile phones, tablets/iPads, or computers. They can do this via their SharePoint or via this link: ePlatform
The LRC is open every day before school from 8:15am, at break, lunch and after school (Monday-Thursday until 4pm, Friday until 3.30pm).
Pupils are welcome to attend to complete their homework, make use of the computers and practical resources, as well as receive support from staff. Creative writing and book clubs run weekly, and board and card games are available. Additionally, there are drop-in relaxed reading sessions on Tuesday and Thursday mornings before school where students can share what they are reading, listen to extracts of books and make new friends.
Literacy intervention
To help pupils to develop their literacy skills, literacy intervention is in place for pupils who need it across Years 7-11 who have been identified through assessment as requiring additional support. Our dedicated literacy team works in conjunction with Learning Support.
